Montauk Wedding | Emily + TJ

I’m Emily Turner and I’m a Master Instructor at SoulCycle. I grew up in Kansas City but I’ve lived in NYC for nearly a decade (10 years this July!). My husband TJ and I own a home in Montauk, where we spend as much of our free time as we can. We enjoy beach walks, surfing, riding bikes, beach bonfires + cocktails with our friends - pretty much anything allows us to soak up the beauty of Montauk.

TJ is best described as the human incarnate of a golden retriever. He’s smart as hell, a friend to many, loves being outside, running around and usually always has a cheery disposition and positive outlook on life. He’s the best.

What was most important aspect to you about the wedding day?

Wow, hard to choose just one, but if I had to pick, I’ll go with our first look. That feeling of standing on the cliffs looking out at the ocean on that hazy day waiting for TJ is one that I will never forget. In fact, I still get chills thinking about the moment when he grabbed my arm, I turned around and we looked into each others eyes for the first time on our wedding day. It was true magic.

I love how your family had so many important roles throughout the day. Can you tell us what they did?

Family is everything to us and it was very important to us that they all felt involved on our big day. We are fortunate enough to still have 4 living grandparents so we wanted especially shower them with as much love as we could. My mom's parents walked my mom down the aisle, TJ's grandpa walked his mom down the aisle, my dad's mom was escorted by my brothers and she also led the family in a blessing before dinner. TJ's dad was the officiant over the ceremony and my dad walked me down the aisle. During the ceremony, we had our moms bring dirt from our respective childhood homes and they added to a tree that is now planted in our yard.

Montauk played such a big role in your lives and relationship. How did you incorporate that into your wedding day?

We had our ceremony on a cliff overlooking the beautiful ocean and lighthouse. There reception was under a tent in our backyard!

Do you have a favorite photo from the day?

There’s a pic during the ceremony where TJ, Tom, and I start cracking up. We had forgotten to edit our part of the vows that had a big word none of us could pronounce, so when he read it we burst into laughter!

Any advice for someone about to get married?

Everything will get done. Everything will be perfect. Just smile and enjoy the journey — You’ll sleep on your honeymoon :)
